Angola
Angola, officially the Republic of Angola, is a country on the west coast of Southern Africa. It is the second-largest Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) country in both total area and population behind Brazil, and is the seventh-largest country in Africa. It is bordered by Namibia to the south, the DR Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Angola has an exclave province, the province of Cabinda, that borders the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The capital and most populated city is Luanda.
Angola is Africa’s seventh largest country with an area of 481,400 square miles, and the 23rd largest country in the world. It is twice the size of Texas. Twenty-six percent of all enslaved Africans brought to North America came from the Congo/Angola region of West Central Africa, which is comprised of present day Congo, Zaire, Angola and Namibia. Approximately 40% of Africans sold in South Carolina came from these countries, 16% – 17% were sold in Virginia, and anywhere from 5% – 36% were sold in Louisiana. Many African-Americans have used DNA tests to trace their lineage back to the Mbundu people.
